FCL vs LCL: Which Should You Choose When Shipping from Dubai?

FCL or LCL from Jebel Ali? Compare cost, transit time, risk and paperwork, and learn the volume at which a full container becomes cheaper.

Every shipper moving cargo out of Dubai eventually faces the same question: book a full container, or share one? The right answer depends on volume, budget, urgency and how fragile your goods are. This guide sets out the trade-offs so you can decide quickly — and know what to ask your forwarder.

The short answer

Choose FCL (Full Container Load) when your cargo fills most of a 20-foot container, when the goods are fragile or high-value, or when you need the fastest and most predictable transit.

Choose LCL (Less than Container Load) when you have a few pallets or cartons, want to pay only for the space you use, and can accept a few extra days in transit.

What FCL and LCL actually mean

With FCL, you book an entire container. It is loaded at your premises or a warehouse, sealed, and only opened at destination (or for a customs inspection). You pay a rate per container, whether it is full or not.

With LCL, your cargo is delivered to a consolidation warehouse (a CFS — container freight station), loaded alongside other shippers’ goods, and separated again at the destination CFS. You pay per cubic metre (CBM) or per tonne, whichever is greater.

Side-by-side comparison

Factor FCL LCL
Pricing Flat rate per container Per CBM or per tonne (minimum usually 1 CBM)
Best for Roughly 13+ CBM, heavy or fragile cargo 1–13 CBM, small or trial orders
Transit time Faster: no consolidation step Slower: add a few days for CFS handling
Handling Loaded once, unloaded once Handled at origin and destination CFS
Damage risk Lower Higher, because of extra handling
Customs Your cargo only One shipper’s issue can delay the whole box
Local charges Per container Per CBM, plus CFS fees

Finding the break-even point

Container capacities are the starting point:

  • 20′ standard: about 33 CBM internal volume; practically 25–28 CBM of cartons.
  • 40′ standard: about 67 CBM; practically 55–58 CBM.
  • 40′ high cube: about 76 CBM; practically 65–68 CBM.

To compare, multiply your volume by the LCL rate per CBM, then add LCL-specific origin and destination charges. Compare that total with the 20′ FCL rate plus its local charges. On many lanes out of Jebel Ali, FCL starts winning somewhere around 13–15 CBM — but rates move, so ask for both quotes.

Tip: Weight matters too. Dense cargo such as tiles, steel or paper can hit a container’s payload limit long before it is full. A 20′ container often carries about 21–25 tonnes of cargo depending on the carrier and road weight limits at destination.

When LCL is the smart choice

  • You are placing a trial order with a new buyer or supplier.
  • You ship regularly but in small quantities, and holding stock costs more than a slightly slower transit.
  • Your goods are robust and well packed — palletised and shrink-wrapped cargo travels best.

When FCL is worth paying for

  • The cargo is fragile, high-value or easily contaminated (food, electronics, finished furniture).
  • You need a firm delivery date for a project or a retail launch.
  • You can consolidate several suppliers into one container in Dubai before shipping — often the best of both worlds. Our warehousing team can receive and load goods from multiple suppliers.

Questions to ask before booking

  1. What is the all-in cost — freight plus origin and destination charges?
  2. For LCL, what is the minimum chargeable volume and the CFS cut-off date?
  3. How many days does consolidation add at origin and destination?
  4. Who issues the bill of lading? (An NVOCC issues its own house B/L.)

Frequently asked questions

At what volume is FCL cheaper than LCL?

For many lanes out of Jebel Ali, a 20-foot FCL becomes cost-competitive somewhere around 13–15 cubic metres. The exact break-even depends on the LCL rate per CBM, local charges at both ends and the FCL rate on that lane, so it is worth pricing both.

Is LCL slower than FCL?

Usually yes, by a few days. LCL cargo has to be received and consolidated before sailing and de-consolidated at the destination warehouse, which adds handling time at both ends.

Can I ship less than one cubic metre by LCL?

Yes, but most consolidators charge a minimum of one cubic metre (or one revenue ton), so very small shipments are billed as if they were 1 CBM.
